A Guide to Types of Arrays in PHP

PHP has two types of arrays: indexed and associative.

Indexed arrays

An indexed array is an array with a numeric index, where the keys are integers. Indexed arrays are created by assigning values to an array without specifying any keys.

   $fruits = array('apple', 'banana', 'orange');

   // or

   $fruits[0] = 'apple';
   $fruits[1] = 'banana';
   $fruits[2] = 'orange';

Associative arrays

An associative array is an array with string keys rather than numeric keys. Associative arrays are created by assigning values to an array with string keys rather than numeric keys.

   $ages = array(
      "John" => 35,
      "James" => 24,
      "Kate" => 42
   );

   // or

   $ages['John'] = 35;
   $ages['James'] = 24;
   $ages['Kate'] = 42;

PHP also supports multi-dimensional arrays, which are arrays that contain other arrays as elements. For example:

   $students = array(
      array("John", 35, "Male"),
      array("James", 24, "Male"),
      array("Kate", 42, "Female")
   );
